The girl looked to be in late elementary school, and she was heading toward a metal sign at the edge of the park— a residential map of the area. Her back was to me, so I had no idea what she looked like, but the large backpack she carried was just so notable—which meant I recognized her immediately. That's right, she was facing that residential map in the same way only moments earlier, before Senjogahara showed up. It didn't take long for her to run off that time—but she seemed to have returned. From the looks of it, she was comparing a note she carried with what was printed on the sign.
Hmm.
In other words, she was a lost child. The note must have had a handwritten map or an address written on it.
I focused my sight on her.
And when I did, I noticed a nametag sewn onto her backpack— ”Grade 5, Class 3,”and her name inscribed with a thick permanent marker.
I wasn't a hundred percent sure how you read the characters for her first name, but…it was probably "Mayoi.
Her last name, though... How was it read? I'd never seen it before. ”Yakudera”…maybe?
Language arts wasn’t my strong suit.
In that case, I thought, I’d try asking someone from whom it was.
“...Hey, Senjogahara. You see that grade schooler in front of that sign? How do you read that last name written on her backpack?"
"Huh?" Senjogahara looked puzzled. "Are you kidding me? I can't even see it.“
"Oh... "
Right.
I'd forgotten.
My body wasn't normal anymore—and I'd fed Shinobu my blood the day before, on Saturday. At that moment, my physical abilities were far greater than normal, though not to the degree they had been over spring break. That of course went for my vision, too. If I wasn't careful— l'd see things in the far distance like they were right in front of me. It's not as if making them out posed a problem, but seeing stuff that other people don't—isn't such a good feeling.
It creates discord with others.
Senjogahara had that problem, too.
"Umm..." I said to her, "it's written with the characters for the numbers eight and nine, followed by the one for 'temple'...”
“Well, you'd read that as 'Hachikuji.”
"’Hachikuji’?”
"Yes. Are you that illiterate, Araragi? At your academic level, I'm surprised you managed to graduate kindergarten."
"I could graduate kindergarten with my eyes closed!"
"That is a gross overestimation of your own abilities.
"Now you're even nitpicking my retorts?!"
"You're not going to impress anyone with those kinds of conceited remarks."
"You're impressing me, for what it's worth...”
"But seriously, anyone with so much as a slight interest in Japanese history or classics, which is to say anyone with any intellectual curiosity would know how to read it. There are such things as dumb questions, Araragi, and you're dumb whether or not you ask them."
"Yeah, okay, whatever. I'm a bad student."
"You're sorely mistaken if you think recognizing that fact makes it any better."
“……”
Had I done something to her?
I could have sworn we were just talking about how she was going to thank me…
"Sheesh... Well, anyway," I said.
